BattleTech Save Editor

Found what could be considered a bug. This mod defaults the required mech parts to 2 parts to create a mech, if your save was set to 3 parts as default and you have 2 mechparts in your inventory already this creates the same issue as if you added too many mechparts via the mod.

You may want to have the mod check for required mechpart setting to make sure this doesnt get changed, and perhaps add in an option to manually change this

Hey all!

First of all I would like to thank the creator of this mod; I use it all the time and it’s amazing!

Now on to my question: does anyone know of a link anywhere that has a list of all the pilot quirks you can add using this save game editor?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

installed game. downloaded this editor.
found savegames C:\Users\PC\AppData\Local\GOG.com\Galaxy\Applications\50593543263669699\Storage\Shared\Files\C0\SGS1

what might be teh problem?

thx zero
BtSaveEditorLog.txt (12.9 KB)

Hey! Great program, worked flawlessly with Battletech and all it’s DLC… installed RogueTech and edited the savegame file, but when saved, I incur a 2Billion monthly cost immediately. Can this be fixed please?

Hmmm… Do I have the wrong file? this is what I get when I try to load it
BtSaveEditorLog.txt (1.6 KB)
and where I found the file.

Hopefully you can lend me a hand with this I would really appreciate it.

yes, this is the wrong location, the correct location for save files depends on the platform (Steam, gog, etc) that you own the game on

Loving this mod - was amazing to be able to tool up with a decent lance and get the hang of how to play without getting steamrolled out of the gate. Also love being able to test weapons and get a feel for gameplay style before starting the campaign (don’t have time IRL to play the campaign multiple times!)

If this mod is still maintained, I would LOVE to be able to edit mechs in the mechbay - just to change equipment status from destroyed to functional to resurrect a rare item (lazy, I know).

Thank you for all your hard work Jaime Wolf, I have yet to meet the Dragoons in game!

Would help if it found the JSON though.

If it can’t find the JSON files then you are not pointing it at the correct location. Try pointing it at root directory of the game installation.

It worked thanks

Save Editor absolutely will not recognize any .sav file whatsoever. It only returns an unhelpful “failed to load”.

Using Steam on Windows, looking at the .sav files in STEAM\userdata\77771418\637090\remote\C0\SGS1 and none of them can be read at all. There’s no functionality to aim the editor at the game’s installation directory in order to scan the installation without loading a save first. There’s no functionality to just the editor to look at the installation and read the correct directories it should be looking for, in case none of the sparse documentation scattered around a half dozen completely different websites on the internet are actually correct. Checking the AppData\LocalLow\Harebrained Schemes\BATTLETECH directory didn’t turn up any readable files either. Not using the game pass, so those directories don’t exist to look in, of course.

So far as I can tell, the editor does not work at all, currently. And based on the comments in literally everyplace on the internet this editor is posted, it’s just not working for anyone else either.

The editor works perfectly fine,

If your having issues with loading saves in it, then it is very likely something about YOUR system/environment that is causing it. I use it regularly myself still, as do other modders without issue.

a few things you can check:

  1. Make sure the saves in question are for the current version of the game, if your using an older version (or a pirated version), that may cause saves to not load as data structures expected by the editor may not exist.

  2. Make sure the game is closed when you attempt to load the saves.

  3. If steam is in offline mode, try switching it to online mode and make a new save, and try loading that.

  4. verify your saves are actually good and not just corrupt.

if for whatever reason none of those work, then I need logs and a copy of the save in question to debug.

Finally, I only post this here (and old versions I can’t remove remain on Nexus), if your finding it posted elsewhere, then its stolen and I can’t/won’t make any garuntees about functionality, but generally speaking most comments here and on nexus all show that it works

The saves are from the current version of the game, with all the DLC installed. I definitely was not running the game while trying to load the saves. Not a pirated copy of the game, it was bought from Steam perfectly normally. Steam was not in offline mode, neither while making the saves nor while trying to edit the saves. I can load the saves in-game just fine. It’s just that the editor won’t read them.

I made the saves while in the campaign’s second map (right after the how-to-move tutorial).

Save file from STEAM\userdata\77771418\637090\remote\C0\SGS1:
e3062e3b-8f70-49b5-9af0-ca018265f6c1.sav (836.2 KB)

And the save editor’s log file: BtSaveEditorLog.txt (2.4 KB)

This looks to either be a save that was done in combat (aka mid mission) or has a very strange mod in it.

the provided save fails to load because it contains data on a pilot_default. aka a pilot that has no name or callsign and the editor simply doesn’t know how to handle that because every pilot in your roster must have a name.

If this is a combat save (which I suspect it is), then I would recommend you make a save when you are out of mission (aka on the argo) and try that instead.

While you can modify combat saves, depending on what you do you may not get your expected results due to how the game handles certain things (especially around pilots) when combat ends.

I am also having an issue with the save editor not opening a save. There is no message, the open save dialogue just closes and there’s no change in the editor. I’m using the most recent version of the legacy installation of Battletech: Extended. I know the editor worked with BEX before since I had used it prior to moving to my new computer with Windows 11.

3199d3b1-a96c-4acc-ab45-b2f4de821fa2.sav (4.0 MB)

This is the save file. Only thing is I have edited the chassis files for most mechs to add weapon and JJ hardpoints to them all, and disabled the Extended JJs mod.

First, I have been using BT Save Editor for years now with my BEX saves. LOVE IT. THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I just switched to RogueTech and it isn’t working the same. I installed the latest RogueTech version following their instructions (not on C drive…).

Issue #1: it isn’t recognizing the Pilot Skills. I can see the Unspent XP and can modify that, and I can even edit the quirks, but it isn’t loading the skill points and doesn’t allow me to change the specializations. I realize that RogueTech uses different specializations than Vanilla, but I was hoping it would work. Does it? Thanks!

Issue #2: I just added a Laser_LargeLaser_3-Magna to my test save just to see if it allowed item additions. It added it, but in-game it lists the Laser as “YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE THIS, REPORT ON DISCORD” with a tonnage of 999. It was in the drop down list of weapons, so I thought it was valid. Is it loading an incorrect list of items, or did I win the lottery and find a stinker in the list? Thanks!

FYI I am loading saves in RogueTech from the default Cloud location. (steamapps\common\BATTLETECH\RogueTechSaves\cloud\C0\SGS1)

I guess another question is: does this look like the right folder for the saves?

Thank you again!!

You are loading the correct saves.

for your issues:

  1. This is because RT (and BTA) use a mod known as abilifier and the editor doesn’t know how to interact with that so it simply doesn’t allow edits to skills because otherwise it will break pilots in game. In an ideal world, I’ll eventually be able to update the editor so that it plays well with abilifier, but no time frame for that.

  2. This happens because RT long ago removed ++ weapons from being available, but due to how the game functions they can’t remove the underlying item from the game’s files itself. With mods as complex as BTA and RT, there are simply items that won’t show up in the inventory or are not supposed to be available, so they present as you found. Unfortunately there is no standard in the community for how to mark such items, so the editor simply displays them anyways in order to maintain compatibility with vanilla and other mods. Its not a great answer but after a bit of experimentation, you can usually learn which items to avoid adding to prevent seeing issues like this.

Awesome! Thank you for the reply!

You have done a great job with this mod! Much appreciated! I selfishly hope you get time to add to the editor, but it works great as-is!

Do you know if there is an offline (downloadable) version of the full set of gear in RT? I had a document like that for BEX that I kept updated and it was super helpful. I find the online wiki pages take too long to load and I was hoping to get it all in tabular format for easy comparison, not the click-load-scan-back-rinse-repeat that you have to do with the wiki…

Cheers!
